Under the title ‘KISS MY SOUL – Heavenly & Earthly Love in Contemporary Art’, the Dordrechts Museum is showing an exhibition about the representation of love today.
More than 75 works by 30 artists provide an overview of visual art in the 21st century, exuberant and with a warm beating heart. From body lust to motherly love, from heartbreak to parental love, from brotherly love to love grief.
The group exhibition features a mix of internationally renowned artists such as Marlene Dumas and Tracey Emin, alongside emerging talent such as Tanja Ritterbex and Charlott Weise.
The source of inspiration for the exhibition is the painting Heavenly and Earthly Love (1850) by Ary Scheffer, a public favorite from the collection of the Dordrechts Museum.
Scheffer’s work shows love as two-faced, spiritual versus physical.
KISS MY SOUL shows how love in the 21st century is depicted with many nuances between heaven and earth: free from gender roles, in a rainbow of passions.
KISS MY SOUL makes the changing and dynamic character of love visible.
